369. "Abide in me"

1 Why is thy faith, O child of God, so small?
Why doth thy heart shrink back at duty's call?
Art thou obeying this "Abide in me,"
And doth the Master's word abide in thee?

2 Oh, blest assurance from our risen Lord!
Oh, precious comfort breathing from the Word!
How great! the promise! could these greater be?
"Ask what thou wilt, it shall be done for thee!"

3 "Ask what thou wilt," but oh, remember this,
We ask and have not, for we ask amiss
When, weak in faith, we only half believe
That what we ask we really shall receive.

4 Increase our faith, and clear our vision, Lord;
Help us to take thee at thy simple word,
No more with cold distrust to bring thee grief;
Lord, we believe! help thou our unbelief.
