IX. The Soldier of the Cross

1 Am I a Soldier of the Cross,
A follower of the Lamb:
And should I fear to own his cause,
Or blush to speak His name?

2 Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vain world a friend to grace,
To help us unto God?

3 Should I be carry'd to the skies,
On flow'ry beads of ease?
While others fight to win the prize,
And sail thro' bloody seas?

4 Yes I must fight if I would reign
Increase my courage, Lord.
I'll bear the cross, endure the shame,
Supported by thy word.

5 The saints all in this glorious war
Shall conquer though they die;
They see a triumph from afar
And meet it with their eye.

6 When that illustrious day shall rise
And all the armies shine
In robes of vict'ry thro' the skies,
The glory shall be thine.
