LXX. When Jesus on the Cross I see

1 When Jesus on the Cross I see;
My soul is mov'd within:
To think my Lord has died for me!
To free my soul from sin.

2 Should such a creature as I am,
My Lord's compassion move;
Astonishing that I should claim
The merits of his love.

3 Sure it would melt my hardn'd heart,
And humble me the more;
Could I but now and feel in part,
The pains my Saviour bore.

4 My proud, my stout, and selfish will,
No longer could abide;
My vile affections prone to ill,
Would soon be crucified.

5 Was all the force of learning join'd
To make me know and feel--
My dark and wretched state of mind,
Yet all could not avail.
