111. On Jordan's banks the Herald's cry

1 On Jordan's banks the Herald's cry
Announces that the Lord is nigh:
Come then and harken, for he brings
Glad tidings from the King of kings.

2 Then cleansed be every breast from sin,
Make straight the way for God within,
And let us all our hearts prepare
For Christ to come and enter there.

3 For Thou art our Salvation, Lord
Our Refuge and our great Reward.
Without Thy grace our life must fade,
And wither like a flower decayed.

4 Stretch forth Thy hand, to health restore,
And make us rise, to fall no more:
One more upon Thy people shine,
And fill the world with love divine.

5 To Him who left the throne of heaven
To save mankind, all praise be given:
Like praise be to the Father done,
And Holy Spirit Three in One.
