177. This Is Not Your Rest

1 For this is not your rest, Oh! pilgrim stranger,
A narrow way at best, and full of danger;
Arise, depart,
Oh! weary heart,
His way leads to the cross and from the manger.

Refrain:
But there is a way, a beautiful way,
The redeemed of the Lord shall traverse one day;
No lion is there;
No shadow of care
Shall over the path of the ransomed ones stray.

2 For this is not your rest, Oh! pilgrim, weary,
Pursue your way with zest, though lone and dreary;
Then haste away,
Nor pine to stay,
The dawn of day is bright with hope, and cheery. [Refrain]

3 For this is not your rest, Oh! pilgrim brother,
Your cross and crown is blest, then seek no other;
Arise, with joy,
All doubt destroy,
We’ll sing his praise in meeting one another. [Refrain]
