How do I determine which version of a hymn text, tune, or harmonization is the original? I would expect the text page for a hymn to contain the original version, not some "representative version", or at least a reference to it.
The representative text on the text page, by default, is from the newest hymnal with the text entered. You can change your preferences on your Hymnary account page to reflect the oldest hymnal with the text entered. Also the page scans are in chronological order. However, we may not currently include the original source in our collection. Something a volunteer could do would be to research and add original sources.

Agreed
If there were a way to give this in the text authority, at least where known, this would often be very useful and welcome information.
