"ab" after a date

I've been entering additional data in NBPB1914, mainly tunes and attributions (plus rearranging the contents, gradually as I go), and I just got to hymn #24, where I find that Keble is supposed to have written this "1827, ab". I entered it verbatim, but am wondering what it means. Is it an anti-latinist's (or anti-Romanist's) principled alternative to "ca.", and if not, what does it mean?

I think "ab" probably means "abridged"

I imagine you're right.
