Info needed for new hymnal

You are here

How much information do I need to enter for a new hymnal? For instance, "O Worship the King" (LYONS) is already in the database. Do I really need to enter "O worship the King, all-glorious above" as the first line for the page spreadsheet? Do I need to write out the entire hymn in the full text column for the text spreadsheet?

Thanks for the help! Very excited to add in a new (old) hymnal to the database!

We would like to have as much information as possible. This makes it possible for the hymnal to be searchable in a number of ways, for instance, by topic, scripture passage, key, meter, as well as authors composers, titles, first lines and hymn text. Hymnals are not all the same so we want to capture the uniqueness-es as well as the similarities. This makes the site useful for scholars as well as casual users. Entering the full text is optional. It allows the text to be searched, so it is useful. The hymnal will likely have modifications to the texts that other hymnals may not have. I would say an easier way to enter the text for a hymnal is to do it after the hymnal has been uploaded, rather than to use the text spreadsheet. You can go to the hymn summary page, copy the text that appears there or use the compare text feature, paste it into your hymnal and then modify it so it looks like the text that is in your hymnal.

Thanks! That sounds like a great plan. I'll leave the full text for once I've finished everything else.
